Victoria Gas Ban Affects Tarneit
From 1 March 2027, if the gas hot water system in an existing owner-occupied home breaks and cannot be repaired, it must be replaced with an electric alternative; in a rental it must be replaced with a heat pump water heater. Repairs are still allowed and exemptions exist. From 1 January 2027, new homes must be built all-electric.
With 86% of Tarneit homes connected to gas, this will affect a significant number of households in your area. Planning your replacement now lets you choose the right system on your timeline, rather than in an emergency.
