From 1 March 2027, gas hot water systems in existing homes must be replaced with an efficient electric alternative (heat pump) when they reach end-of-life. Repairs are still allowed. New builds already banned from gas connections since January 2024. Rentals also face mandatory replacement of gas heaters.

Solar Victoria Hot Water Rebate
Victorian owner-occupiers: 50% of the purchase price up to $1,000, or up to $1,400 for an eligible locally made system. Combined household taxable income under $150,000 (reduced from $210,000 on 1 July 2026), property value under $3 million, replacing a system at least 3 years old, using a Solar Victoria registered installer. Stacks with the VEU discount and federal STCs.
