What Makes a Good Heat Pump Installer

Heat pump hot water systems are not the same as standard electric or gas hot water units. They use refrigeration technology to extract heat from the air, which means the installation requires specific knowledge that goes beyond general plumbing.

CEC Accreditation

The Clean Energy Council (CEC) is Australia's peak body for the clean energy industry. CEC-accredited installers have completed training specific to renewable energy systems and must maintain their accreditation through ongoing professional development. While not legally required for all heat pump installations, CEC accreditation is a strong signal that the installer has the right expertise. Some state rebate programs require a CEC-accredited or program-registered installer.

Licensed and Insured

Every state has its own plumbing licensing requirements. Your installer must hold a current plumbing licence in the state where the work is performed. They should also carry public liability insurance and provide a certificate of compliance for the plumbing work. If the installation involves electrical work (which most do), a licensed electrician must handle that portion.

Heat Pump Specific Experience

A plumber who installs one heat pump a month is very different from one who installs five a week. Experienced heat pump installers know the quirks of each brand, understand refrigerant line requirements for split systems, get the placement right for noise and airflow, and can size the system correctly for your household. Ask how many heat pumps they have installed in the last 12 months.

Rebate Processing

Australia has a layered rebate system for heat pumps. Federal STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) provide $500-$700 off at point of sale. Many states offer additional rebates or certificate schemes on top. The best installers handle all of this paperwork, applying discounts directly to your invoice. You should never have to chase a rebate yourself after installation.

Workmanship Warranty

Your heat pump comes with a manufacturer warranty covering the product itself. But the installation, including plumbing connections, mounting, drainage, and electrical work, should be covered by a separate workmanship warranty from the installer. Look for a minimum of 12 months, with quality installers offering 3-5 years.
