Key Findings

Solar payback under 4 years in South Australia

SA has Australia's highest electricity prices (38c/kWh), making solar savings the most dramatic. Combined with strong sun hours, SA offers the fastest payback period in the country.

WA feed-in tariff at just 2.25c/kWh changes the equation

Western Australia's ultra-low feed-in tariff means self-consumption is critical. WA homeowners should pair solar with a battery or shift heavy usage (EV charging, heat pump) to daytime hours.

Victoria rebate stacking saves up to $5,200

Victorian homeowners can stack federal STCs ($2,500-$3,500) with the Solar Victoria rebate ($1,400) for the largest total discount. Combined with competitive metro installer pricing, VIC offers excellent value.

Methodology

The PumpSwap Solar Cost Index is compiled from installer quote data, manufacturer pricing, STC values, and state rebate programs across 1,533 Australian suburbs. Prices reflect 6.6kW systems fully installed including panels, inverter, mounting, and all labour.
